TONIGHT’S TOP STORY | NATIONAL PUBLIC SAFETY

ESCAPED TENNESSEE MURDERER REMAINS AT LARGE AS INVESTIGATORS EXAMINE POSSIBLE WISCONSIN CONNECTION

The search for escaped Tennessee prisoner Jacob Allen Morley continues Thursday evening as authorities investigate possible leads extending across several states. Morley, 28, escaped from the Northwest Correctional Complex near Tiptonville on Sunday, October 25, while serving a life sentence for the 2022 murder of Cody Birchfield in Carter County, Tennessee. Prison authorities reportedly discovered him missing at approximately 11:30 p.m., and surveillance footage subsequently showed him leaving the institution. Investigators believe he stole a white Ford F-350 pickup truck after escaping, beginning a sequence of events that has complicated the search.

The stolen pickup was eventually located abandoned in Marion, Illinois, providing investigators with an important clue about Morley’s movements. According to the reporting available Thursday, surveillance evidence suggests the truck was left there at approximately 4:40 a.m. Monday, although authorities did not locate it until Tuesday morning. The gap between the vehicle’s abandonment and its discovery creates uncertainty about where Morley traveled afterward and whether he obtained another means of transportation. Investigators have not publicly established his current location, and the discovery of the truck does not mean he remained in the surrounding community.

A separate investigation in Wisconsin has attracted attention because of a possible connection to the escape. Authorities are examining an armed robbery at the Bank of Deerfield in Dane County, where a gunman reportedly demanded money, restrained employees, and fled with cash. The robber allegedly stole a Lincoln MKZ after leaving the bank, and that vehicle was subsequently recovered. No injuries were reported during the incident, but the circumstances have prompted investigators to consider whether Morley may have been involved. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has acknowledged pursuing potential leads while emphasizing that no connection between Morley and the robbery has been confirmed.

Law enforcement agencies continue coordinating efforts to locate Morley, with a combined reward of up to $15,000 reportedly available for information leading to his apprehension. Authorities describe him as approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing about 240 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes. Because he is a convicted murderer who escaped from lawful custody, officials consider him dangerous and advise members of the public against approaching or attempting to detain him. Anyone who believes they have encountered Morley should move to safety and contact 911 immediately. Information can also be provided to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-TBI-FIND.

Beyond the immediate manhunt, the escape raises questions about institutional security, staffing, surveillance procedures, and the coordination of emergency notifications. Investigators will need to establish how Morley crossed the prison perimeter, obtained transportation, and traveled such a considerable distance without being apprehended. Any examination of institutional responsibility must distinguish documented security failures from assumptions about how the escape occurred. For now, public protection and Morley’s safe apprehension remain the immediate priorities, while questions about the circumstances of his escape deserve a thorough and transparent review.

WORLD NEWS TONIGHT | ISRAEL

ELECTION DISPUTE INTENSIFIES AS OFFICIALS REJECT UNSUBSTANTIATED FRAUD CLAIMS

Israel’s parliamentary election remains politically unsettled Thursday night as competing parties assess the results and consider their prospects for forming the next government. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his political allies have raised questions about the conduct of the election, including allegations involving voting irregularities and possible foreign interference. Election authorities and Israel’s domestic security agency, Shin Bet, have cautioned against treating those allegations as evidence of widespread electoral fraud. The distinction is important because an investigation into a specific incident does not establish that an entire election was compromised or that particular communities engaged in misconduct.

The emerging parliamentary figures have left both Netanyahu and former military chief Gadi Eisenkot facing difficult political calculations. A governing coalition requires at least 61 seats in the 120-member Knesset, and neither principal political grouping has demonstrated that it can assemble such a majority independently. Arab-led parties performed strongly enough to become potentially important participants in coalition negotiations, although substantial political disagreements complicate that possibility. Netanyahu remains an experienced political negotiator, while Eisenkot must determine whether parties with differing priorities can cooperate sufficiently to support an alternative government.

Thursday’s controversy has added another layer of uncertainty to an already complicated political situation. Allegations concerning election conduct should be investigated wherever credible evidence warrants examination, but the existence of a political accusation is not proof of wrongdoing. Israel’s election institutions remain responsible for counting and certifying the results according to established procedures. Until those processes and subsequent coalition discussions are completed, predictions about the next government remain provisional rather than settled outcomes.

WORLD NEWS TONIGHT | SPAIN

RAILWAY DISASTER CLAIMS 69 LIVES AS INVESTIGATORS EXAMINE POSSIBLE SAFETY FAILURES

Spain continued observing three days of national mourning Thursday following the devastating collision between two high-speed passenger trains near Urda, in the province of Toledo. The latest reporting places the death toll at 69, with approximately 50 injured people still receiving hospital treatment. Emergency personnel have continued searching the wreckage, recovering victims, and supporting families awaiting information about their loved ones. The disaster has shaken a country whose extensive high-speed railway network has long been an important part of its transportation system.

The collision involved a Renfe passenger train and a stationary Iryo train, with the impact causing severe damage to multiple railway carriages. Investigators are examining indications that a signaling or communications problem interrupted normal train operations before the collision. Questions have also emerged about a subsequent decision to authorize movement while a stop indication reportedly remained active. Those details are significant, but investigators have not completed their examination or established a definitive explanation for the disaster. It would therefore be premature to assign responsibility to particular workers, operators, or equipment manufacturers.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has promised a full investigation as railway employees and safety advocates call for a broader examination of operating procedures and infrastructure protections. The tragedy is especially troubling because it is Spain’s second deadly high-speed railway collision this year. Transportation accidents can result from overlapping equipment failures, procedural problems, and human decisions, making a comprehensive inquiry essential. Spain’s immediate responsibility remains caring for survivors and bereaved families, while the longer-term responsibility is determining what went wrong and preventing another catastrophe.

WORLD NEWS TONIGHT | NORTH KOREA

NORTH KOREAN MISSILE LAUNCHES HEIGHTEN REGIONAL SECURITY CONCERNS

South Korea’s military reported Thursday that North Korea launched approximately ten short-range ballistic missiles toward waters off the Korean Peninsula’s eastern coast. According to South Korean defense officials, the weapons were launched from the Wonsan area and traveled approximately 250 kilometers. Japanese authorities also reported detecting suspected missile activity, adding to concerns about the security environment in Northeast Asia. No confirmed reports indicated that the launches struck populated areas, but the activity nevertheless represents another escalation in an already tense region.

The launches follow a period of worsening relations between North and South Korea, including incidents involving the heavily fortified border. South Korean officials have accused North Korea of responsibility for explosive devices that recently injured soldiers, while Pyongyang has denied the allegations. Seoul has expressed interest in discussions intended to reduce the likelihood of further confrontations, but North Korea has not accepted the proposed talks. South Korea continues coordinating its security posture with the United States, while China has called for peaceful management of the dispute.

The danger extends beyond the missiles themselves because the opposing militaries operate in an environment where misunderstandings can have serious consequences. Border incidents, military exercises, and threatening statements can create pressure for immediate responses even when neither government intends to begin a broader conflict. Diplomatic communication and reliable information are therefore particularly important during periods of heightened tension. The international community will be watching for additional launches, changes in military readiness, and any indication that negotiations might resume.

WORLD NEWS TONIGHT | RUSSIA AND UKRAINE

EUROPEAN LEADERS DISAGREE OVER DIRECT CONTACT WITH MOSCOW AS PEACE EFFORTS CONTINUE

Diplomatic discussions concerning the war between Russia and Ukraine are continuing as European governments debate how best to approach Moscow. Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre recently spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, prompting disagreement among other European leaders about whether direct engagement is advisable. Supporters of the conversations argue that diplomatic communication is necessary to understand opposing positions and eventually negotiate an end to fighting. Critics are concerned that poorly coordinated contacts could weaken the negotiating position of Ukraine and its European partners.

The dispute illustrates the difficult relationship between maintaining pressure on a government and preserving opportunities for negotiation. European governments generally agree that any durable peace arrangement must address Ukraine’s security, but they differ over how much direct communication with Russian authorities should occur before formal negotiations begin. Possible future discussions involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States remain under consideration, although no comprehensive peace agreement has been announced. The existence of diplomatic contacts should not be confused with a breakthrough, but neither should the absence of an agreement be mistaken for proof that further negotiations are impossible.

Moscow has also suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could travel to Russia for direct talks, accompanied by security guarantees from the Russian government. No such meeting has been confirmed, and the proposed location raises understandable concerns about the safety and independence of the participants. Those concerns would also exist if Russian President Vladimir Putin were expected to travel to Kyiv and depend entirely on security guarantees issued by Ukrainian authorities. A mutually acceptable neutral venue, credible protective arrangements, and clearly established negotiating procedures could help address those difficulties.

For families throughout Ukraine and Russia, the prospect of peace is considerably more personal than the diplomatic disagreements surrounding it. The war has separated families, destroyed communities, interrupted education and employment, and taken lives on both sides. Historical and political grievances may help explain why relationships between neighboring countries have deteriorated, but they do not make continued violence an acceptable solution. Genuine negotiations will require difficult decisions, mutual recognition of security concerns, and a willingness to pursue a future that does not depend on further destruction.

WORLD NEWS TONIGHT | CANADA AND EUROPE

CANADA AND EUROPEAN UNION PURSUE DEEPER ECONOMIC AND SECURITY COOPERATION

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed senior European Union representatives to Montreal Thursday for a two-day summit focused on economic cooperation, security, and international trade. European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are participating in discussions scheduled to continue Friday. The agenda includes defense cooperation, critical minerals, emerging technologies, scientific research, and educational opportunities for young people. Both governments are exploring ways to strengthen their economic relationship while reducing vulnerabilities associated with international supply chains.

Canada possesses substantial natural resources and energy capabilities, while European countries contribute significant manufacturing capacity, technology, and investment opportunities. Increased cooperation could help both sides develop infrastructure, support research, and create additional opportunities for businesses and workers. The discussions also reflect a broader international interest in building dependable economic relationships during a period of geopolitical uncertainty. Final agreements should be assessed according to the terms formally announced by the participating governments rather than expectations about what the summit might produce.

WHITE HOUSE | NATIONAL SECURITY

IRAN WAR SPENDING REACHES $47.1 BILLION AS QUESTIONS ABOUT FUTURE OPERATIONS CONTINUE

The financial and military consequences of American operations involving Iran remain under scrutiny as Congress considers defense spending and the possibility of additional military action. Figures supplied by U.S. Central Command estimate that the conflict cost approximately $47.1 billion through October 16, including operational expenses, equipment losses, and the replacement of expended weapons. Approximately $29 billion has reportedly been directed toward replenishing munitions used during the conflict. The Pentagon has also reported 21 American service members killed and 865 wounded during the conflict period, figures that underscore the human consequences alongside the financial burden.

The cost of replacing weapons raises questions about military readiness beyond the Middle East. Air-defense systems and other advanced munitions are expensive to produce, and substantial consumption can affect the resources available for future emergencies. Estimates of the overall cost may also increase as additional equipment damage, replacement expenses, and support requirements are assessed. Congressional oversight is therefore important not only for determining how much has been spent, but also for examining whether military objectives justify the continuing expenditure.

President Donald Trump has left open the possibility of renewed military operations against Iran, while diplomatic efforts remain another potential avenue for addressing the confrontation. The possibility of additional strikes does not establish that a new offensive has begun, and public statements about military preparations should not be presented as confirmation of an operation. For American taxpayers, the questions are straightforward: What has been accomplished, what risks remain, and what additional resources could be required? For military families, those questions carry consequences that cannot be measured solely in dollars.

CAPITOL | ELECTION 2026

CALIFORNIA VOTER-ELIGIBILITY DISPUTE EXPANDS FOLLOWING FEDERAL COURT RULING

The Justice Department’s dispute with California election officials has expanded as Americans prepare for the November 3 midterm elections. On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge David O. Carter rejected a federal request that would have required California to separate ballots associated with approximately 20,000 registered voters whose citizenship the government questioned. The judge expressed concern that the proposed procedure could disrupt voting already underway and potentially interfere with the rights of eligible citizens. Federal authorities maintain that they are seeking to enforce election laws, while California officials dispute whether the information supplied justifies the requested intervention.

Additional reporting Thursday indicated that federal grand jury subpoenas had been issued to state and local election officials between October 21 and October 24. The subpoenas suggest that the federal investigation extends beyond the immediate disagreement about how particular ballots should be handled. However, receiving a subpoena does not establish wrongdoing, just as appearing on a government list of suspected noncitizens does not prove that a registered voter is ineligible. Questions about citizenship and voter eligibility must be resolved using reliable evidence and procedures established by law.

Election integrity and the protection of lawful voting rights are complementary responsibilities rather than competing political objectives. Governments must take reasonable measures to prevent unlawful voting while ensuring qualified citizens are not improperly excluded from the process. With control of Congress and numerous state offices at stake, the public has a substantial interest in election administration that is transparent, accurate, and consistent. NewsXR will continue monitoring the court proceedings and any additional federal or state actions without treating unproven allegations as established election misconduct.

COURT BEAT | FIRST AMENDMENT

WASHINGTON POST REPORTER’S CASE CONTINUES TO RAISE QUESTIONS ABOUT GOVERNMENT ACCESS TO JOURNALISTIC MATERIALS

The federal investigation involving Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson remains an important constitutional issue following the FBI’s January 14 search of her Virginia home. Agents seized electronic devices during an investigation involving government contractor Aurelio Perez-Lugones, who is accused of unlawfully retaining classified national-defense information. The Washington Post reported that investigators did not identify Natanson or the newspaper as targets of the criminal inquiry. Nevertheless, the seizure of equipment potentially containing unpublished reporting and confidential communications prompted serious questions about the government’s authority to examine journalistic materials.

Federal judicial proceedings have subsequently addressed restrictions on investigators’ access to the seized information. The central legal question involves balancing legitimate investigative needs against protections established by the First Amendment and statutes governing searches involving news organizations. Journalists do not possess blanket immunity from criminal investigations, but neither does a valid investigative purpose automatically eliminate legal protections for unrelated reporting materials. Courts must consider the scope of the search, applicable statutory restrictions, and the possible consequences for confidential communications.

One concern extends beyond the reporter whose devices were seized. Individuals who fear their conversations with journalists could become accessible to government investigators may hesitate to disclose information about wrongdoing or matters of public importance. This potential chilling effect can weaken the ability of independent news organizations to gather information and hold powerful institutions accountable. At the same time, public confidence requires that government agencies retain appropriate authority to investigate genuine threats to national security. Both responsibilities are important, and determining their lawful boundaries is a task for the courts rather than political assumptions.

ECONOMY AND BUSINESS

AMERICAN ECONOMY EXPANDS BY 3.4 PERCENT AS CONSUMER SPENDING REMAINS STRONG

The American economy expanded at a stronger-than-expected pace during the third quarter of 2026, according to figures released Thursday by the Commerce Department. Gross domestic product increased at an annualized rate of 3.4 percent between July and September, compared with approximately 2.2 percent during the preceding quarter. The latest figure exceeded the roughly 3 percent growth economists had generally anticipated. Consumer spending and business investment, particularly in artificial intelligence-related technology, contributed to the expansion.

Consumer spending reportedly increased at an annualized rate of 3.8 percent, indicating that Americans continued purchasing goods and services despite concerns about inflation and international uncertainty. Businesses have also invested heavily in computing systems, software, and infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence development. Those investments can contribute to economic growth by creating demand for equipment, construction, and specialized services. However, the benefits of a growing technology sector are not necessarily distributed equally across communities, industries, or households.

Housing remains an area of concern as elevated borrowing costs continue affecting buyers, builders, and residential investment. The Federal Reserve voted Wednesday to maintain its benchmark interest rate between 3.75 and 4 percent, with two officials favoring a quarter-point increase. Policymakers remain concerned about inflation even as the broader economy demonstrates resilience. For families, the practical significance of economic growth depends on whether wages and opportunities are keeping pace with the costs of housing, food, healthcare, and transportation.

The Commerce Department’s figures represent an initial estimate and may be revised as additional data become available. Strong national economic growth is encouraging, but it should not be presented as evidence that every American household is financially secure. Some communities may be experiencing considerable opportunity while others continue struggling with expenses and limited access to affordable housing. Understanding those differences is essential to an accurate account of the nation’s economic condition.

NATIONAL PUBLIC SAFETY

CALIFORNIA COMMUNITIES SEEK ANSWERS ABOUT SURVEILLANCE TECHNOLOGY AND INDUSTRIAL SAFETY

Residents in California are continuing to raise questions about the safeguards surrounding automated surveillance technology and industrial facilities located near residential neighborhoods. In Shasta County, public concern has focused on automated license-plate recognition cameras used by law enforcement agencies to collect vehicle information. Such systems can assist investigators in locating stolen vehicles and developing evidence in criminal cases, but they also raise questions about data retention, information sharing, and the monitoring of people who are not suspected of crimes. County supervisors have requested additional information as they consider the operation and future of the technology.

Meanwhile, residents near a GKN Aerospace facility in Southern California are seeking answers following an earlier chemical emergency involving an overheated storage tank. The incident reportedly prompted evacuation orders affecting tens of thousands of people across surrounding communities. Residents have questioned whether existing safety procedures, emergency communications, and protective measures are adequate to prevent a comparable event. Company representatives have met with community members, but concerns remain about what happened and how future risks will be managed.

These cases involve different technologies and industries, yet they share an important issue of public accountability. Communities reasonably expect government agencies and private companies to explain decisions that affect residents’ safety, privacy, and daily lives. Effective oversight should recognize legitimate operational needs while requiring clear safeguards against avoidable harm. Preventing emergencies and protecting civil liberties are responsibilities that deserve attention before a serious incident occurs, not only afterward.

WEATHER TONIGHT & TOMORROW

CHANGING WEATHER PATTERN ARRIVES AS HALLOWEEN WEEKEND APPROACHES

Much of the eastern United States continues experiencing unusually mild late-October weather, with temperatures remaining above seasonal averages in portions of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. A changing weather pattern is expected to bring cooler conditions to some communities as the weekend approaches. Families preparing for Saturday’s Halloween activities should anticipate that evening temperatures may differ noticeably from the pleasant afternoons experienced earlier in the week. Local conditions will vary, making individual community forecasts more useful than broad regional summaries.

Across the central United States, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms remain possible near developing frontal boundaries. The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center did not identify an organized nationwide severe-thunderstorm threat for Thursday evening, refining earlier forecasts that suggested a more substantial possibility of severe weather. Meteorologists are also monitoring conditions that could support isolated stronger storms in parts of southern and central Arizona on Friday. Additional weather systems may bring precipitation, mountain snow, and cooler temperatures to portions of the western states.

For families preparing to celebrate Halloween, weather awareness is only one part of staying safe. Children walking through neighborhoods after sunset benefit from reflective clothing, flashlights, and careful supervision near streets and intersections. Drivers should remain particularly attentive in residential areas where pedestrians may be difficult to see. Whether the evening brings sunshine, rain, or chilly temperatures, a little preparation can help make the holiday enjoyable for everyone.

SPORTS TONIGHT

MILWAUKEE PREPARES TO CELEBRATE FIRST WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP

The Milwaukee Brewers are returning home as World Series champions, bringing a championship celebration to Wisconsin for the first time in franchise history. Milwaukee defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 Wednesday night in Game Five, completing a four-games-to-one victory in the best-of-seven series. Pitcher Jacob Misiorowski held Tampa Bay scoreless through 5⅔ innings before departing with a calf cramp, and Milwaukee’s bullpen preserved the lead. The victory ended a decades-long wait for Brewers supporters who had watched the franchise pursue baseball’s ultimate prize.

Milwaukee is preparing a Parade of Champions for Friday, October 30, beginning at 10 a.m. Central Time. The planned procession will travel through downtown Milwaukee before concluding at Henry Maier Festival Park, where supporters are expected to gather for a championship rally. The celebration will recognize the players, coaches, and staff responsible for the victory, along with the generations of fans who remained loyal through years of disappointment. The event is also expected to honor the memory of legendary Brewers broadcaster Bob Uecker.

The championship represents more than one successful baseball season for the city. Milwaukee previously reached the World Series in 1982 but had never won the title, and local baseball fans have waited decades to celebrate a major league championship. The achievement now belongs to the players and supporters who helped make it possible. Congratulations to the Milwaukee Brewers and everyone in Wisconsin who has been waiting for this moment!

REMEMBER WHEN | OCTOBER 29

A LOOK BACK AT THE WORLD OF 1926

On October 29, 1926, Americans were closely following reports concerning Harry Houdini, the internationally famous magician and escape artist who remained gravely ill in a Detroit hospital. Houdini had spent much of his career astonishing audiences by escaping chains, restraints, and elaborate devices designed to appear impossible to overcome. His final illness, however, was a serious medical emergency involving appendicitis and complications that doctors were struggling to treat. Just two days later, on Halloween, October 31, Houdini died at the age of 52, permanently linking the anniversary of his passing to the holiday.

Elsewhere in the United States, President Calvin Coolidge was taking steps to reserve land in Nevada for a naval ammunition facility. The decision followed growing concern about the dangers of storing military explosives near populated communities, particularly after a devastating munitions disaster in New Jersey earlier that year. Establishing a more isolated storage location was intended to reduce the potential consequences of an industrial or military accident. The story reminds us that public-safety decisions made a century ago were often shaped by tragedies that exposed the need for better planning.

International news also occupied the attention of newspaper readers in 1926. The Prince of Wales visited Paris for an event associated with a hostel serving Canadian students, while relief organizers in New York assembled supplies for Cuban communities recovering from severe storm damage. In college sports, the University of Michigan football team traveled east to prepare for a much-anticipated game against Navy. The transportation, technology, and communications of the era were very different from those of today, but many of the underlying stories remain remarkably familiar.

A hundred years later, people are still trying to improve public safety, respond to natural disasters, strengthen international relationships, and celebrate the accomplishments of their communities. History reminds us that progress is often uneven, but the desire to build safer and more hopeful lives remains a powerful force. That’s our look back at October 29, 1926, before NewsXR.

Goodnight from all of us at NewsXR. God bless you all, and us too, and please keep inspiring! ❤️

P.S. NewsXR is not a religious news organization. We are an independent news organization committed to reporting the facts fairly and without political or religious bias. However, our founder’s Christian faith is part of who we are, and that faith is reflected in the compassion, humanity, and hope we strive to bring to our work.

While we don’t ordinarily close our broadcasts with an extended prayer, there are evenings when we feel one is especially needed. Tonight, with so much division, suffering, and uncertainty in our world, our country, and even here at home in New York, we believe this is one of those evenings.

Whatever your faith or beliefs, you are welcome to join us in a simple prayer for peace, understanding, and a better tomorrow.

TONIGHT WE CLOSE WITH A PRAYER, WONT YOU JOIN.

Heavenly Father,

Tonight, we come before You asking for peace in a world too often divided by hatred, violence, and war. Comfort those who suffer, protect the innocent, and guide the leaders of every nation toward compassion, wisdom, and reconciliation.

Lord, we pray for our United States of America and its wonderfully diverse people. Help us remember that our differences need not divide us, that disagreement does not make us enemies, and that kindness and understanding are stronger than hatred. Teach us to see one another as neighbors, united by our common humanity.

Father, we ask for peace within our nation’s prisons, especially here in our home state of New York. Protect the incarcerated, correctional officers, civilian employees, and their families. Bring an end to violence, abuse, corruption, and suffering. Give our leaders the courage to pursue meaningful reform, where justice, accountability, safety, and human dignity exist together.

Above all, Lord, help each of us become part of the peace we seek. May we show greater kindness, practice forgiveness, stand against injustice, and remember that every human life has value.

May tomorrow bring our world a little closer to peace, our nation a little closer together, and our hearts a little closer to You.

In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray.

Amen.

Goodnight from all of us at NewsXR. God bless you all, and us too, and please keep inspiring! ❤️
